Ferrous Supervisor

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  This is a front line supervisory position within the company steel yard.  Experience in handling, storage and preparation of scrap steel is essential for this position.  Additional qualifications include supervisory experience or training.  Experience and/or certification as a heavy equipment operator are required.  All applicants must possess a Florida Driver License and successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical, and a background check which includes driving record, credit history report and criminal history.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The person in this position must have a thorough knowledge of the scrap steel industry including the operation of the types of heavy equipment used to handle these materials, the proper preparation processes, and the types and quality of ferrous materials that are appropriate for the company to receive.  This person must also have the ability to supervise and direct others to accomplish the daily and weekly processing goals for the ferrous operation.  This person must have the ability to train and mentor others, and develop a well cross-trained team within the ferrous operation.  This person must be able to supervise the safe and proper use of company equipment so as to create an accident and injury free work place. This person must have computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel and the ROM system.  This person also must be able to pass the ferrous metals and crane tests.

 

REPORTS TO: This person reports directly to the Ferrous Manager

 

JOB GOAL: To supervise and direct the receipt, handling, processing and shipment of steel scrap materials for the company.  To assist the Ferrous Manager in meeting all production goals for the Ferrous Department. To train, mentor and develop a steel yard operations team within the company.

 

SUPERVISES: Heavy equipment operators and torch persons.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: (Asterisk (*) essential responsibilities)

  1. Provides direction to all steel yard staff regarding the proper receipt, handling, storage and preparation of all scrap steel received from customers.
  2. Provides supervision and direction to all heavy equipment operators in the safe and responsible handling of all company equipment to reduce accidents, damage and injury.
  3. Assists the Ferrous Manager in meeting the daily, weekly and annual production and inventory goals for steel scrap materials.
  4. Attends and participates in weekly safety meetings
  5. Reports unsafe conditions to the Ferrous Manager.
  6. Evaluates the job performance of assigned personnel and completes performance evaluations.
  7. Prepares work orders and monitors operator abuse problems.
  8. Monitors, directs & assists nonferrous pickers.
  9. Performs other tasks as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:    

____ Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

 

__X_ Medium Work:  Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
